What Is Karndean Flooring?

Researching different materials and products is absolutely key to the success of any interior design scheme. Opting for something without really knowing its individual properties and characteristics can prove to be a very costly mistake to make… especially where your floors are concerned.

Carpet and wood are, of course, very popular materials and they will always be a solid choice for the home, as well as commercial environments. However, you may find that something like Karndean flooring is a more appropriate option for some parts of the property.

This type of flooring is made from calcium carbonate (or limestone), polyvinyl chloride and pigments, composed of five layers… two PVC backing layers, a high-def photographic layer, a PVC embossed wear layer and a top coating made of polyurethane.

The wear layers are different between the various product ranges, which means you’re sure to find the right product to suit your needs. As a good rule of thumb, remember that the thicker the wear layer, the more durable your floor will be.

It’s also important to remember that Karndean floors are smooth, which means that they can be slippery if water or any other liquid is left to sit on the surface. While these products are designed to be slip-resistant, it’s still advisable to wipe up spillages and mess as soon as possible, ensuring that the flooring remains dry.

While it can’t be used outside, this type of flooring can be used in any room of the house, including on the staircase. It can also be laid over underfloor heating and be used in conservatories, so you’re sure to find it a very versatile flooring product indeed.

What’s more, there are also various design strips available so you can add decorative borders and other design features, really making your floor your own. If you need any further help or advice relating to flooring for the home or your place of business, get in touch with us today.
